While it was already well known that the range-topping Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG will be packing a beastly new twin-turbo 5.5-liter V8 for 2012, what wasn’t known was that changes would also come under the hoods of the lesser E350 and E550 models as well. Mercedes-Benz has now revealed that the 302 horsepower, 273 lb-ft of torque 3.5-liter direct-injection V6 found under the hood of the SLK350 will now work its way under the hood of the E350 as well – a decision that should come as little surprise. This new engine sees a modest jump of 14 horsepower and 15 lb-ft of torque compared to the engine it replaces, and a new seven-speed transmission should further help to boost mpgs as well. The second previously unconfirmed Mercedes E-Class model to receive an update for 2012 is the E550, which will see the 5.5-liter naturally aspirated engine from which it received its name replaced with a direct-injected, twin-turbocharged 4.6-liter engine. As is the case with the E350, this isn’t the first time this engine has been revealed, as it was born in the CL550 coupe previously.
