Mercedes-Benz will unveil a new hybrid system for its E-Class sedan at the 2012 Detroit auto show. The trim, called the 2013 Mercedes-Benz E400 Hybrid, will feature compact hybrid components attached to Mercedes' standard 3.5-liter V-6.
The gas/electric hybrid system — which includes auto start-stop, regenerative braking and pure electric driving, depending on speed — has an estimated 24/31 mpg city/highway rating and a 27 mpg combined rating, according to Mercedes. The system, which was originally featured on the S-Class, improves gas mileage by about 17% over the standard E350. The compact nature of the hybrid system means that neither passenger nor cargo space has been compromised, Mercedes says.
 It's a marked improvement in gas mileage, but the gains do not compare favorably to the 2013 Lexus GS 450h (29/34/31 mpg) or the 2012 Infiniti M Hybrid (27/32/29 mpg). BMW hasn't announced mileage figures for its 2012 BMW ActiveHybrid 5 yet.
Mercedes says its hybrid will only cost moderately more than an E350 sedan, which currently starts at $50,490; the S400 Hybrid is an entry-level offering for the S-Class lineup, for instance. A similar tack might be planned for the E400 Hybrid.
The model will go on sale sometime in the middle of next year, the automaker says. We'll have more information when the hybrid debuts at the 2012 Detroit auto show.

Mercedes C- and E-Class coupes to get AWD option next year.
4Matic has proven to be a popular feature on various Mercedes-Benz models, especially in U.S. regions that experience four distinct seasons. But while all-wheel-drive is almost a necessary option in the luxury sedan segment, Daimler's C-Class and E-Class coupes have soldiered on only with rear-drive.
According to Car and Driver, that will change for next year. The 4Matic system will reportedly only be offered with the company's 3.5-liter V6, which pumps out 302 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque.
This news could mean changes for the C-Class sedan as well. Currently, 4Matic is only offered with the 3.0-liter V6-equipped C300 sedan, so this could mean that the C350 sedan could also get an AWD option in 2012. That's good news for grip-loving buyers who want more oomph than the modestly powered 228-horsepower C300 can provide.

Mercedes-Benz's U.S. executives expect to add volume with a new range of front-wheel-drive compact cars that arrive starting in 2013 and new derivatives of the redesigned C class due in 2014 or 2015.
Around the world, Mercedes will introduce at least 10 new models by 2020 as part of a plan to become the world's top-selling luxury-vehicle brand by then.
But not all of those vehicles will come to the United States. For example, Mercedes-Benz USA won't take any more large station wagons--including the new CLS Shooting Brake or the freshened C-class wagon--because they don't sell well here.
E class: The E350 coupe and cabriolet got the new 3.5-liter V6 engine in July. This month, the E550 coupe and cabriolet get a new 4.6-liter V8 engine that makes 420 hp. The E550 also gets electromechanical steering.
The range will get a freshening in 2013.

Mercedes-Benz plans to expand its lineup of high-end luxury cars and SUVs in an effort to surpass BMW's record profit.
Mercedes will add variations of its flagship S-Class model after revamping it in 2013 in a bid to become the segment's profit leader, according to two people familiar with the matter. The Stuttgart, Germany-based automaker is also considering a convertible version of the $114,100 CL coupe, they said, declining to be identified discussing internal plans.
BMW and Volkswagen's Audi have grown at more than five times the pace of Mercedes over the past decade by more rapidly increasing their offerings. The 125-year-old manufacturer, which has also dropped to third in profitability, lost the luxury-car sales lead to BMW in 2005 and slipped behind Audi this year.

In past generations, she was often labeled planet Earth's favorite taxi. (Or have you always preferred the Ford Crown Victoria with the shiny black leatherette?) The Mercedes-Benz E-Class, however, has long since graduated to become a premium middle-management darling in all corners of the globe.
Still, even Mercedes-Benz North America would have to admit that a mid-life and/or new model year E-Class is not generally a traffic-stopping event. This time around, however, there's more going on with Mercedes' ninth-generation contender than, say, adding a new Pipe Smoker's Package or overhead cold beverage storage-TRONIC. And while it may still not cause a road block, this mid-shelf-life version of the W212 E-Class should, at least, make everyone slow down to rubberneck a bit, because the new V6 and V8 E-Class wants to take you farther on a full tank while making more power and torque to exercise your executive privileges.
When the freshened E350 shows up this September with its M276 3.5-liter V6, it's expected to remain the lion of the line, with 80 percent of North American E-Class sales. It will continue to come in all three main bodystyles – sedan, coupe and convertible. All individual options and packages will be available for these three core Es. The E350 4Matic wagon will also remain, but it won't be alone – it'll be joined by the rear-drive E63 AMG Wagon with the latest M157 518-horsepower 5.5-liter bi-turbo V8 (550-hp with AMG Performance Package) to duke it out with the supercharged 556-hp Cadillac CTS-V Wagon. (*cue the singing angels*). There will naturally also be an E63 AMG sedan coming over with the new engine underhood.
In the meantime, all E550 V8 units sold in the U.S. will be sold only as 4Matics with Sport Styling included. That means no rear-wheel-drive E550s and no Luxury Styling pack for the V8, either.
And let's not forget the E350 BlueTEC rear-wheel-drive-only sedan with its 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6. This one stays as is while adopting any tweaks inside and out.

Though today the letters stand for power and performance, if you go back four decades, almost nobody had ever heard of a tuning garage called AMG. That was until the Mercedes-Benz tuner showed up at the 1971 running of the 24 Hours of Spa with... a luxury sedan. But not just any luxury sedan.
AMG took the 300 SEL 6.3, complete with wood dash and carpeted floors, bored it out to 6.8 liters and raised output up to 428 horsepower and 448 lb-ft of torque. With a top speed of 164 mph, the car qualified fifth out of sixty entries and went on to place first in its class and second overall, beating the likes of Niki Lauda and Hans Stuck. It was a pivotal moment that put AMG on the map.
Hans Heyer was one of the three drivers who alternated behind the wheel of the car dubbed the "Red Pig" that fateful day. And now forty years later, his son Kenneth Heyer is returning to Spa in a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 in matching livery to the original. Highlights of the open-top two-door model include roll-over protection, the A-pillars reinforced by two additional tubes and the plug-in B-pillars. The roll-over protection consists of two robust bars, each with a diameter of 1.4 inches, which are housed in the rear head restraints in modules behind the rear seat backrests. A tilting cone sensor detects imminent danger to the occupants based on extreme skidding movements or acceleration caused by impact. If this sensor then sends a corresponding signal, pre-tensioned pressure springs are activated by pyrotechnic means, i.e. extremely quickly.
Consequently, both roll-over bars in the rear head restraints are extended. They reach their highest point and are locked automatically within a fraction of a second. In combination with the robust A-pillars, each of which is reinforced with two high-strength steel tubes, the steel bars provide highly effective roll-over
protection.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe.

Mercedes-Benz has released more details on the new two-door E-Class Coupé. The Coupé is based on the new W212 E-Class platform and replaces the old CLK range. The hard-top four-seater has no B-pillars and features fully retractable side windows. Mercedes-Benz says it has the lowest Cd figure of all series-production cars in the world at just 0.24. That makes it extremely aerodynamic.
Fitted standard with the car is Merc's Agility Control suspension system which automatically adjusts to suit prevailing road conditions. Safety features include the Pre-Safe system which has the brake feature that automatically brakes the car if it detects the imminent danger of a collision and the driver has not reacted to preceding warnings. Attention Assist is another interesting one which uses about 70 parameters in order to determine if the driver is still alert or not.
The engine models in the diesel category are the E250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY with 150kW (204hp) and 500Nm of torque. It has an average fuel consumption figure of 5.1 litres per 100km. Next is the E350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY making 170kW (231hp) and maximum torque of 540Nm. Average fuel for this model is 6.8 litres per 100km on the EU cycle.
Listed petrols are the 150kW (204hp) E250 CGI, the E350 CGI good for 215kW (292hp) and the E500 V8 that puts out 285kW (388hp) and 530Nm of torque.
The COMAND control centre on the front cluster uses a similar wheel to that of the S-Class to control aspects like the CD player, radio, telephone and satellite navigation.
Trim choices are the Elegance and Avantgarde with each offering different customers what they require. An AMG Sports pack will also be sold. It comes with 18-inch AMG light alloy wheels, a sports suspension, two-tone interior leather and a sports pedal cluster among others.

Mercedes E-Class Tail Lights.

While it was already well known that the range-topping Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG will be packing a beastly new twin-turbo 5.5-liter V8 for 2012, what wasn’t known was that changes would also come under the hoods of the lesser E350 and E550 models as well. Mercedes-Benz has now revealed that the 302 horsepower, 273 lb-ft of torque 3.5-liter direct-injection V6 found under the hood of the SLK350 will now work its way under the hood of the E350 as well – a decision that should come as little surprise. This new engine sees a modest jump of 14 horsepower and 15 lb-ft of torque compared to the engine it replaces, and a new seven-speed transmission should further help to boost mpgs as well.

The second previously unconfirmed Mercedes E-Class model to receive an update for 2012 is the E550, which will see the 5.5-liter naturally aspirated engine from which it received its name replaced with a direct-injected, twin-turbocharged 4.6-liter engine. As is the case with the E350, this isn’t the first time this engine has been revealed, as it was born in the CL550 coupe previously.

According to a leaked dealer order guide for the
2012 Mercedes-Benz E-Class range, we red-blooded Yankees might be able to once again sink our teeth into the super-hot E63 AMG Estate. As you'll recall, Mercedes-Benz decided not to offer the new-for-2010 E63 wagon here in the States, but that is wrong is reportedly being righted for 2012. BenzBoost.com reports that the cargo-hauling AMG stunner will be available for U.S. customers later this year, powered by the same twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V8 that debuted in the E63 sedan at last month's New York Auto Show, complete with start/stop technology and mated to a seven-speed MCT dual-clutch transmission.
We can already picture the inevitable E63 AMG Wagon vs. Cadillac CTS-V Sport Wagon battle, and it looks awesome.
In other E-Class news, BenzBoost reports that the E550 sedan – which gets a new 4.6-liter twin-turbo V8 – will only be available with 4Matic all-wheel drive. A similar move was made to the 2011 CL550 coupe, which uses the same engine and is no longer available in a two-wheel-drive configuration. Stay tuned for the official details later this year.

Carlsson Mercedes-Benz E-class. Carlsson has announced the special styling and peformance packages for the latest Mercedes-Benz E class Cabriolet. The luxury open-top received unique exterior as well as 20 per cent more power and some fine touches for the interior.
The perfromance package includes the additional ECU C-Tronic® DIESEL POWER, which is plug-and-play device boosting the V6 diesel engine from 231PS (170 kW) to 280PS (206 kW) and the torque is 648Nm, instead of 540Nm. The ECU CD35 REVO for the Mercedes 350 CDI engines is delivered by Carlsson as a completely retrofittable solution inclusive of all materials for connections and montage. The price is 1784 Euro.
The tuning company also offers sport end mufflers with the two double-walled stainless steel end tubes. They priced at 2319 Euro.

The styling package includes the new aerodynamic package consisting of a front spoiler – 594 Euro and a front spoiler lip RS for 629 Euro. The rear spoiler is priced at 475 Euro.
The suspension upgrade includes sports springs for 355 Euro. These lower the Mercedes-Cabriolet with 30 mm and significantly improve the stance of the car.
Carlsson Mercedes-Benz E-class Cabriolet stands on either classic 16-spoke wheels in 18”, or 1/5 REVO again in 18” and big 1/10 Ultra light 20” alloys. The set fitted with brand new tires starts at 2712 Euro.
Inside, the tuned Merc can be individualised with automatic gear shift lever in leather and Alcantara – 213 Euro, aluminium door pins – 58 Euro, the soft velvet doormats with the Carlsson logo – 154 Euro and aluminium pedals together with footrests – 282 Euro.

2011 Mercedes-Benz E550 Cabriolet: Driven.

2011 Mercedes-Benz E550 Cabriolet. The E550 Cabriolet looks the part of luxury convertible cruiser in every way. It's not the sort of luxury convertible that you'd take the family to the Whippi-Dip; rather the one you'd use to take the friends out to gelato on a hot summer night.
From pretty much every angle, whether you're following the chiseled, pointed front end, bold mesh-backed grille, and uninhibited three-pointed star in front; or the graceful fender crease in back, which rolls through with complexity to the rear lights; it's a beauty.
There's certainly that, but there's more. As I found when I had the chance to drive the
E-Class Cabriolet a couple of times over the past several months, the E550 has a lot more attitude—and quickness—than you might think.
More attitude, and it's seriously quick.
First off, the E550 doesn't have the strong-yet-demure, turbine-like character that's accompanied pretty much every other non-AMG Mercedes-Benz V-8 in recent history. This current one—making 382 horsepower from 5.5 liters—is a little more extroverted than we've come to expect, especially here in the Cabriolet. Just off its slightly lumpy idle, there's a deep, resonant bark, and rev toward the top and the V-8 sings out with a growl and a surprising bite, impressing as more than a little AMG-like.
It's fast. The E550 Cabriolet can get to 60 mph in the low-five-second range, according to track testing from several sources.
A seven-speed automatic transmission comes hooked up to the V-8 and seemed to adapt quickly to different driving styles—not at all wasting revs when we were just plodding along with traffic but holding gears a bit longer when we'd just been tromping it in the curves. Dial up Sport mode—which commands stiffer damper settings—and the transmission earns a little more eagerness. Paddle-shifters are there, but I only felt compelled to use them a couple of times.

Speedriven has tuned Mercedes-Benz E-Class W211 (2002-2009). The tuning company has released some pictures and details about the brutal luxury saloon. The name of the project is EV12.
Speedriven E-Class is powered by a huge V12 twin-turbo engine with some modifications, which stay in secret. However, the tuner reported that EV12 has a maximum output of 700HP, which are send to the custom wheels.
The results is thanks to top-mounted water-to-air intercoolers, Scorpion air intakes, larger fuel injectors and billet-wheel turbochargers. To make sure that all upgrades work properly, the tuner re-mapped the ECU.
Outside, EV12 features Brabus aerodynamics package and the blacked-out front grille.
